Translating Affinities: Catalan and English Contemporary Literary Exchange

Translating Affinities: Catalan and English Contemporary Literary Exchange

Stefan Tobler and Bernat Fiolan English publisher and a Catalan literary agent, represent a successful partnership (the forthcoming English publication of Eva Baltasar's debut, which has the working title Permafrost), but also a literary trend. Lately, many Catalan books, both Modern Classic and Contemporary works, have been sold by agencies like Salmaialit, acquired by publishers like And Other Stories, translated into English and distributed to UK readers. This is also true the other way round, as many UK books are acquired by both independent companies and big commercial groups for Catalan publication. How does this exchange work? Is there any specific pattern, subject or genre standing out? Who are the professionals involved? What are the key books? Is this business shaping literature?

The Literary Translation seminar programme is produced with the help of funding from Arts Council England and Amazon Crossing Sponsorship
