Ageism in Publishing – Fact or Fiction?

Ageism in Publishing – Fact or Fiction?

These days everyone is talking about diversity and inclusion, particularly ethnicity, race, gender and sexual orientation. But what about ageism? The Equality Act applies to discrimination based on age as well as race, sex, religion, sexual orientation and disability. Many people experience ageism frequently and yet it is rarely addressed by inclusion policies.

The Royal Society for Public Health did a study last year which concluded that ageism is rife, particularly but not exclusively among millennials. RSPH chief executive, Shirley Cramer said, “Too often ageist behaviour and language is trivialised, overlooked or even served up as the punchline to a joke – something we would rightly not tolerate with other forms of prejudice.”

How is the publishing industry harvesting and benefitting from the experience that long-involvement brings? Have you lost out on opportunities because of being too old or too young? Is diversity of age given as much weight as other aspects of diversity in your organisation?

This seminar offers the opportunity to discuss ageism within inclusion; the policies and practices we should establish, and how as an industry we reflect and value experience and potential.

Chaired by Associate Professor Alison Baverstock of Kingston University, the panel will include advice from Jo Howard of recruitment specialists Mosaic on how best to present yourself mid-career, and the mind-set you need to develop to support applications. Other panellists will include representation from HR and key industry figures.
