Breaking New Ground: A Launch and Call to Action Celebrating British Writers and Illustrators of Colour

13 Mar 2019, 10:00 - 11:00

Children's Hub

Why should books for young people feature and be written by people of colour? Don’t these books exist already? And what difference does it really make? Join Speaking Volumes and an expert panel of acclaimed authors and children’s literature specialists as they discuss these crucial issues and put out a Call to Action to everyone invested in our new generations — from publishers and libraries to literary festivals and schools.

As part of this event, Speaking Volumes will launch Breaking New Ground, a brochure celebrating the contribution of 100 British writers and illustrators who are producing brilliant work for children and young people. It highlights both established and up-and-coming authors and artists of colour, with specially-commissioned pieces from writers Amina Jama, Catherine Johnson, Errol Lloyd and Irfan Master, and artwork from Shirin Adl, Emily Hughes, Uday Thapa Magar and Ken Wilson-Max. BookTrust and Pop Up Projects, two of the nation’s most respected children’s literature organisations, will also headline their own research and announce their exciting new initiatives to combat the lack of diversity in literature for children. Together, this forms the wider Breaking New Ground initiative.

Breaking New Ground is funded by Arts Council England and is part of Speaking Volumes’ long-term Breaking Ground project.
