5 minutes with...Sam Missingham

Sam Missingham is Head of Events at HarperCollins. We're delighted that she'll be Co-Chairing Publishing for Digital Minds next month (13 April) along with John Mitchinson, Unbound.

What was the last book you read?
Apple Tree Yard, Faber

Which writer would you have loved to have met – and why?
Raymond Carver, can only imagine he was a pretty dark character, but would happily have hitched a ride around the California of the 60s with him. The way he describes the time makes you feel like you can touch and smell it. Amazing talent.

Tell us the 1 thing about your company/business that we need to know… HarperCollins has just launched a virtual romance festival which is happening on the 7th & 8th June. www.romance-festival.com. It’s my first event since I joined the company and I’m extremely excited about it. Open, inclusive & fun.

The one piece of advice you’d give to someone starting out in publishing today is…?
Hustle hard and get on Twitter (yes, I know that’s two)

Go on, let us know your musical guilty pleasure
Dolly Parton – I like to pour myself a cup of ambition

What would be the title of your autobiography?
Oh, cruel fate why do you mock me?

What was your first job?
Sweeping the floor of my Mum’s flower shop. Like all things, sweeping is a skill you have to work at.

When was your first London Book Fair (LBF)?
2009 – I gave people chocolate if they came to The Bookseller’s stand and said they were on Twitter. Early days.

What is the one essential item you bring to the Fair?

What piece of advice would you give first-timers at the Fair?
Don’t be afraid to talk to strangers, go to ALL of the free events, set yourself some goals and again, hustle hard.
