Chinese & English simultaneous interpretation. Synergies and Differences between CLT (Chinese Language Teaching) and ELT (English Language Teaching) Publishing Sponsors: General Administration of Press and Publication of China and London Book Fair Organizers: China National Publications Import & Export (Group) Corporation and London Book Fair Just as English Language Teaching publishing was the forerunner of international publishers’ presence in the Chinese publishing market, Chinese Language Teaching publishing has the potential to open doors for Chinese publishers in today’s international markets. Just as the teaching of English as an established global language was a priority for Chinese education, the teaching of Chinese will grow from its existing base in tandem with the growth and globalization of the Chinese economy. The number of students enrolled in Chinese Language classes at the worldwide Confucius Institutes is increasing by almost 40% every year. Chinese Language Teaching will become an important market for International and Chinese publishers alike. This seminar is to discuss areas in which ELT and CLT publishing businesses can learn from each other, and areas in which they may continue to differ. Some of the questions are: Are the student user requirements for CLT and ELT similar in international markets? To what extent can CLT and ELT share course design in specific markets? Or will linguistic origins dominate the style of new course materials? Will the two languages be taught in the same university and language school environments or will they be taught in separate specialist ELT or CLT institutions? To what extent will CLT and ELT use common book trade supply chains internationally, or will they, as now, persist with different routes to market? Will future language teaching publishing be dominated by international publishing groups, will Chinese publishers seek to form their own supply chains, or will Chinese publishers merge their operations into the existing international publishing supply channels? These questions are key to the future development of the international publishing market and the seminar will invite experts from the CLT and ELT publishing fields to share their experiences and comment on what the future may hold in key developments in the international market place.
