Silvija Tretjakova is head of the Children’s Literature Centre (1998) the only institution of such profile in Latvia, which focuses on children’s literature, renders information services and promotes reading. Her achievements are connected with the development and successful implementation of the program for promoting reading in the whole state and in the Latvian centres abroad. That program involves ca. 20 thousand children from the age of 5 – 18 years, shaping them as active readers of new books and their estimators. This has positively influenced the processes of writing, translation and publishing of children’s books in the state, and promoted library services to young readers. From 1997-2003 she was the first President of the Latvian Section of IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People). At present, she is head of the International Affairs of this organisation. She is the author of more than 40 publications on crucial topics of the branch in professional journals in Latvia and other countries, and co-author of many textbooks
