How can authors write stories about places and cultures readers have never heard of and still gain a loyal fan base? Cultural identity, in being local and therefore particular, might seem in conflict with the universal experiences of our human existence. Beneath our differences, however, lie fundamental common threads, unearthed by stories told in unusual voices and settings. Diversity, far from being about others, turns out to be about us. Author Selina Siak Chin Yoke will read from her bestselling novel The Woman who Breathed Two Worlds and share her insights on the process of making stories from an unfamiliar country both accessible and relevant to an international audience. Part of the session is intended to be interactive and audience participation will be encouraged. The discussion will be followed by a Q&A session as well as a book giveaway and signing. There will be a surprise at the end.
